Earbuds that sound excellent can still make your voice thin, muffled or robotic on a call. Product pages rarely make that trade-off obvious: they count microphones, promote ‘AI noise cancellation’ and quote total battery life, but usually do not show what the person on the other end will actually hear. Choosing well means testing the complete call experience, not buying the largest feature list.
1. Define where your calls actually happen
Start with your hardest regular environment. A quiet bedroom, an open office, a ceiling fan, a café, a railway platform and a roadside call create very different microphone problems. If most of your meetings happen at a desk, stable laptop connectivity and comfort may matter more than aggressive noise suppression. If you take calls while commuting, voice isolation from traffic, wind handling and secure fit become the priority.
Write down the devices and apps you use as well. Phone calls, WhatsApp, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and laptop conference apps can behave differently because the phone, computer, operating system and app all participate in the audio chain. A review recorded on one phone does not guarantee identical results on your laptop.
2. Separate ANC from call noise reduction
Active noise cancellation, or ANC, mainly reduces what you hear from the outside world. Microphone noise handling determines what the other caller hears. A model can have powerful ANC for music yet transmit office chatter, horns or wind during calls. Terms such as ENC, AI calling and four-mic or six-mic systems describe an implementation or marketing feature; they are not a comparable performance score.
Look for two separate pieces of evidence: how natural the voice sounds in quiet conditions, and how well the system preserves that voice when background noise is added. Over-aggressive processing may suppress noise but also clip consonants, pump the volume or make speech sound metallic.
3. Trust repeatable microphone samples over adjectives
Independent testing is useful when every product receives the same voice sample and the same background-noise challenge. RTINGS describes playing a consistent voice sample from a speaker positioned like a mouth, recording it through the earbud microphone and repeating the process with standardized noises such as conversation and transport. SoundGuys similarly uses a calibrated artificial mouth with simulated background noise, reverberation and wind. That makes direct samples more valuable than a reviewer simply saying ‘calls were clear’.
- Listen to the quiet sample for body, clarity and sibilance—not just loudness.
- Compare office-conversation and traffic samples for words lost under noise reduction.
- Treat a wind sample as essential if you call outdoors, on a bike stop or near a fan.
- Prefer recent tests made after major firmware updates, and check whether the app or phone model is stated.
4. Run your own return-window call test
Even good laboratory tests cannot reproduce your ears, voice, phone and call apps. During the return window, record the same 20-second paragraph in four places: a quiet room, beside a running fan, with another person talking nearby and outdoors away from traffic danger. Then make a real call through your most-used app and ask the other person to describe clarity, background noise and volume without telling them which mode is active.
Repeat the test with one earbud if you plan to use single-bud mode. Confirm that mute, answer, reject and volume controls work in your calling apps. Some touch controls behave differently across Android, iOS, Windows and macOS, and a feature shown in the companion app may not work inside every meeting platform.
5. Check multipoint and switching behaviour
Multipoint is valuable when earbuds stay connected to a phone and laptop, but the word alone does not describe the experience. Check whether an incoming phone call interrupts laptop audio correctly, whether the earbuds return to the previous device after the call, and how long switching takes. Multipoint usually means maintaining two connections; it does not necessarily mean mixing audio from both devices at once.
Also check what disables multipoint. On some products, a high-quality music codec, gaming mode or another advanced feature cannot operate at the same time. If work calls are the priority, reliable switching is more useful than a codec badge you cannot use in your normal two-device setup.
6. Do not buy a codec name without checking support
Bluetooth LE Audio introduces a newer architecture with the LC3 codec plus specifications for call control, microphone control and coordinated devices such as true-wireless earbuds. That is promising, but a logo or Bluetooth version number does not prove the complete feature works between your exact phone and earbuds. Both sides need compatible hardware, software and enabled profiles.
For ordinary calls, microphone design and speech processing often matter more than the music codec list. AAC, aptX, LDAC and other codec names mainly help describe media playback options and device ecosystems; they do not rescue a poorly placed microphone or weak background-noise algorithm. Verify compatibility with your phone model instead of assuming the most codecs means the best calls.
7. Read battery claims correctly
Separate continuous earbud life from total life including the charging case. A ‘40-hour’ headline may still mean the earbuds need to return to the case after a much shorter session. Calls can consume power differently from music because microphones and speech processing remain active. ANC, transparency mode, volume, codec and network conditions also affect runtime.
Independent battery tests are strongest when playback level and test loop are standardized until shutdown. For your own use, choose enough single-charge margin for the longest meeting or journey, then check how many minutes of listening a short case recharge provides. A convenient quick top-up is more useful than a large total figure if your calendar has back-to-back calls.
8. Fit, comfort and IP rating matter in India
A secure seal improves bass and passive isolation, while a loose bud may shift its microphones and controls during speech. Try every supplied tip size and wear the earbuds for at least an hour before deciding. Pressure, itching and constant readjustment become bigger problems than a small sound-quality difference during long workdays.
For humid weather, workouts and monsoon splashes, check the actual IP code rather than the phrase ‘water resistant’. IEC 60529 defines the enclosure protection classification; the first digit relates to solid-particle protection and the second to water ingress. Confirm whether the rating applies only to the earbuds or also to the case. An IP rating is not permission to swim with the product, and liquid damage may still be excluded from the warranty.
9. Verify BIS details, warranty and service
Wireless headphones and earphones are listed under India’s compulsory registration framework. The official order requires covered products to conform to the relevant Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark under BIS licensing. Check that the registration details, model identity and manufacturer on the product or packaging are consistent rather than trusting an unverified marketplace image.
BIS registration is a safety baseline, not a call-quality award. Also confirm invoice availability, replacement policy, battery warranty, service location and how the brand handles a single dead earbud or charging case. For low-cost true-wireless products, after-sales support can determine whether a minor fault becomes a total loss.
10. Use this shortlist before paying
Reject any option that cannot clear the essentials below. After that, compare price and music features within the remaining shortlist.
- Independent quiet, conversation, traffic and wind microphone samples are available.
- Your phone, laptop and primary calling apps are tested or explicitly supported.
- Multipoint switching, single-bud mode and mute controls match your workflow.
- Single-charge earbud life covers your longest session with useful margin.
- Fit remains comfortable and stable for at least an hour.
- The claimed IP rating, BIS details, invoice, warranty and service route are verifiable.
The simple recommendation
For office-first use, prioritize natural voice capture, conversation-noise handling, dependable multipoint and comfort. For commuting, add strong traffic and wind samples, secure fit and a useful IP rating. For mixed music and calls, first eliminate products with weak microphones, then compare sound and ANC among the survivors. Search Gaandfaad with your exact setup—for example, ‘earbuds for Teams calls on Windows and Android under ₹3,000’—instead of asking for one universal best pair.
